Sea buckthorn allergy: does it happen, symptoms, how to avoid
Sea buckthorn, due to its unique health and nutritional properties, is used both in cooking and in cosmetology. Siberian Gold, as it is called in Russia, contains more than 190 biologically active substances that positively affect health. The question often arises: is there an allergy to sea buckthorn, and what are its symptoms. You will find the answers in the article.
Sea buckthorn is a unique plant that has been domesticated today, and all its parts are considered healing. The fruit is the main valuable component, although leaves and branches are used in the preparation of tea and decoctions.
The main sources of valuable products are berries themselves, juice from fleshy tissue and seeds (one in each fruit).
Juice is a nutritious drink with a high amount of suspended solids and a very high content of vitamin C and carotenes. It may have an oil phase trapped in suspended solids, or the oil may be removed and provided separately.
Did you know? From the pulp remaining after removing the juice, sea buckthorn yellow pigment is obtained, which is used as a food coloring.
- All the wealth of natural components makes sea buckthorn a medicinal plant, the use of which has a beneficial effect on health, namely:
- increases the body's resistance;
- destroys free radicals;
- improves blood circulation;
- useful for infections;
- fights microbes in the body;
- calms gastrointestinal diseases;
- used in cancer prevention;
- beneficial effect on the nervous system;
- improves brain function;
- delays aging;
- facilitates the course of rheumatic diseases;
- used in the treatment of asthma and lung diseases;
- possesses anti-inflammatory properties;
- has an antidepressant effect;
- protects the liver and supports the regeneration of its tissues;
- used to treat radiation sickness.
The composition of sea buckthorn berries
Sea buckthorn surpasses many plants in the content of biologically active substances and contains:
- beta-carotene (provitamin A);
- tocopherols (vitamin E);
- vitamins C, K, group B, PP;
- folic acid, palmitic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic;
- flavonoids, phospholipids, lutein;
- organic acids - citric, malic, nicotinic;
- macrocells (Na, Mg, Si, Fe, Al, Zn, Ca);
- trace elements (Ni, Mo, Mn, Cu, Sn) and other ingredients.
The chemical composition of the berries is quite complex. Fruits and seeds contain from 8 to 13.1% fatty oil. Here are the main sources of energy - triglycerides of oleic, linoleic, linolenic and palmitic acids. Anthocyanins, flavonoids, phospholipids (up to 1%), steroids (up to 2%), organic acids, carbohydrates and tannins were found in sea buckthorn.
Important! Sea buckthorn oil contains folic acid, which is necessary for the health of expectant mothers and the full development of the fetus. Accepted before pregnancy, it reduces the risk of serious birth defects in the brain and spine of the unborn baby by 70%.
This is very valuable due to the physiological properties of the product while ensuring the proper functioning of individual organs or parts of the human body when used. The combination of synthetic vitamins (A + E) is unhealthy, as is the use of synthetic beta-carotene.
Natural provitamin A improves the condition of the skin and mucous membranes, which is important for the development and fulfillment of their protective and secretory functions. Beta-carotene is present together with other carotenoids (alpha-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin found in the retina) and other supporting compounds that have an additional therapeutic effect.
Did you know? Sea buckthorn refers to dioecious fruit crops, which means the development of female flowers (subsequently berries) on some plants, and on male ones (empty flowers). Therefore, the site must have both copies.
Natural Vitamin C is known to be essential in oxidation and reduction processes. The manifestation, presence and course of many diseases depends on its level in our body.
The oil contains two types of beneficial mono- and polyunsaturated fats, which make up more than half of the total amount. It is one of the only plant foods that contains all four fatty acids - omega-3, omega-6, omega-7 and omega-9.Seeds and leaves are rich in quercetin from the flavonoid group. This component lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease.
Berries, leaves and sea buckthorn oil are used not only as a medicine, but also as an excellent cosmetic. As the phytocosmetic practice shows, the decoction of the leaves and branches of sea buckthorn, which contain more than 10% of the tannins used to massage the head or for nutritional compresses, strengthens the bulbs and stimulates hair growth, is part of the conditioner and tonic.
Carotenoids contained in sea buckthorn oil have regenerative (anti-wrinkle) and antioxidant properties, have a beneficial effect on blood vessels, so it is used not only inside but also outside.
A high concentration of palmitic acid in oil accelerates the granulation process and helps to restore the epidermis, works as an effective additive in therapeutic agents and eliminates skin damage, post-traumatic acne scars, stretch marks, eczema, inflammatory and allergic manifestations on the skin.
The oil is used to treat burns, frostbite, pressure sores, irritation caused by the sun or radiation, for example, after radiation therapy. Polyphenols and beta-carotene contained in sea buckthorn oil slow down skin aging.Despite the useful properties of sea buckthorn, there are contraindications to its use. Products in any form are not recommended for patients with acute cholecystitis, pancreatitis and inflammation of the liver and gallstone disease.
In most cases, the juice, tinctures and extracts of sea buckthorn are considered relatively safe. However, before using them, make sure that you are not allergic to this plant. Products are allowed (except tincture) for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Sea buckthorn juice can also be given to children older than 3 years.

Why is there an allergy to sea buckthorn?
Any substances can cause allergies, but it is believed that red and orange (like sea buckthorn berries) products contain obligate allergens. The manifestation of allergic reactions to berries is common, and the reason is a large number of vitamins. Not every organism is able to adequately respond to such a "vitamin" bomb.
Important! Allergies can occur due to individual intolerance to berries or due to abuse of sea buckthorn.
Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system to allergenic substances that are completely harmless to most people. The body considers these substances in the event of a malfunction of the immune system as foreign violators and inadequately responds to the situation, causing unwanted symptoms.The tendency to allergies is often hereditary. However, even if both parents have an allergy, there is no certainty that the child will also struggle with allergic manifestations. Moreover, a person does not inherit a certain allergy, for example, to sea buckthorn, but rather its probability. Sometimes allergies occur in children whose family does not have such a disease.
Respiratory (respiratory) allergies can be caused by inhalation of pollen during the flowering of sea buckthorn or may have the character of a cross reaction in case of hypersensitivity to pollen of other plants, weeds and herbs. This type of allergy is seasonal.
A food allergic reaction can occur not only after swallowing or inhaling the allergen, but also when applied to the skin or in other contact with products from berries and seeds. It can be cosmetics, lotions, creams, ointments, sprays and sea buckthorn oil. This type of allergy can occur at any time of the year.
1- allergen (mast cell); 2- reagins; 3- allergens; 4- allergens associated with reagins; 5- broken granules; 6- secreted histamine
Sometimes children also have cross-reactions here. In a baby who is allergic to sea buckthorn pollen, an allergic reaction may occur after drinking juice or berries, since they contain the same protein that is present in pollen.
How does it manifest
Symptoms and diagnosis of allergies depend on the type of painful reactions, with each child and adult reacting differently, and the symptoms vary greatly.
Allergies can manifest as burning in the eyes, runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, tightness and swelling in the throat, rash throughout the body, nausea, diarrhea, breathing problems, and even fainting. The so-called anaphylactic shock is relatively rare after contact with an allergen.
This is a serious allergic reaction that threatens the life of a child and an adult. Symptoms of allergies can only appear from time to time or throughout the year.
Inhaled allergens can cause so-called allergic rhinitis, which usually disappears in people between the ages of 40 and 60. Symptoms of a respiratory allergy: sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion and coughing. They usually occur during burning in the eyes, rupture of capillaries and redness of the eyelids, which causes tearing.
Symptoms of a food allergy depend on the amount of allergen consumed and the degree of sensitivity of the body to the product. Itching in the mouth and throat, rash, urticaria, dermatitis, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, shortness of breath and shock may occur after eating an allergenic product.
With symptoms of allergies in children, measures must be taken to immediately counteract allergic reactions. Without treatment, an atopic march can occur, which includes a transition from one allergy to another, more serious.
In addition, not only mild symptoms such as a runny nose, but also an extremely dangerous anaphylactic shock, which poses a serious threat to life, may appear among the body's reaction to an allergen. Therefore, you should make sure that the child’s allergy is diagnosed quickly and effectively, and everything is done in order to maximize its separation from allergens.Diagnosing some types of allergies is relatively simple, while others may be a problem for the doctor. To make a diagnosis, skin tests are usually done for the most common environmental allergens and food allergens. Even if a skin test and a blood test show an allergy, it is only diagnosed when the child has allergic symptoms.Tests can be performed in a child, but the results are more reliable for children over 2 years old.
It is difficult to determine the substance that causes the baby’s allergy. With children, it is better to go to the doctor right away. You cannot search for diagnoses and medications yourself. Unfortunately, there is no cure for allergies. However, its symptoms can be alleviated. The most important thing is to limit the child’s contact with a particular allergen, in this case, sea buckthorn products.You can also use medications prescribed by your doctor, such as antihistamines and steroid sprays. Sometimes doctors recommend immunotherapy to reduce the child’s sensitivity to this allergen.
It should be remembered that injections are only effective when inhaled allergens. If the child is allergic to the food consumption of the product, it is necessary to completely exclude berries from the diet. With hypersensitivity to sea buckthorn, it is recommended to abandon apples, peaches, cherries, plums, apricots.
If the child is allergic to pollen, close the windows in his room and change clothes after returning home from a walk during the pollen season of sea buckthorn.
In the case of frequent complaints of abdominal pain and rashes for no apparent reason, it is better to contact a pediatrician, who, if necessary, will refer you for a consultation with an allergist. Only a specialist with confidence will tell you what to do and how to avoid problems in the future.

The best way to rule out allergic reactions is to avoid the allergen. Depending on its nature, it is recommended, for example, to adjust the diet and read the labels of the products you buy (if you are allergic to food) or not to leave the house during the pollen period (if you are allergic to pollen).In addition, the treatment of allergies in children can also have a pharmacological form, thanks to the use of antihistamines and similar drugs. However, they do not eliminate the disease, but only reduce its symptoms.
However, it has not yet been established how to avoid allergies, and only general recommendations for the prevention of the disease can be given:
- to prevent the development of allergies in children, it is necessary to eat healthy food during pregnancy and lead a healthy lifestyle, and breastfeeding the newborn and the child to continue as long as possible;
- with caution to introduce new foods, observing the reaction of the body;
- if possible, eliminate contact with allergens, whether it is food, cosmetics or pollen;
- thoroughly wash fruits and berries before use, since the chemicals that process them can cause allergic manifestations;
- monitor moderate consumption of berries;
- in the event of an immune system reaction, exclude a potential allergen (for example, sea buckthorn) from the diet for at least two weeks to see if allergic symptoms disappear;
- to test for allergies, apply a small amount of sea buckthorn product to the inside of the forearm and evaluate the reaction after 12 hours.
The moderate use of such a useful product as sea buckthorn has a healing effect on the entire body, providing the necessary vitamins and elements, and serves as a prevention of allergic reactions. In case of the first signs of the disease, you should abandon the berries and consult a doctor who will prescribe treatment.
